Virtual murder deserves..five years in prison?

Yahoo news which is a ridiculous source of simple attention getting headlines posted something kind of interesing. I don't know how relevant this is to the academic world or protocols, but my last post certainly wasn't either so here goes nothing.

Online Divorcee Jailed
A woman who was divorced by her husband without warning became angry, hacked unto his online video game and killed his avatar. How crazy is that! It gets better though, the man reported this to the police after learning his character was dead and she is now facing five years in prison and a $5,000 dollar fine.

Theres two ways you can look at this. One is completley hysterically and consider the story just
another weird yahoo news story. Another is that she murdered someone online which is like making a threat in real life and she hacked into someone's account. I remember making a non-serious threat to someone on a myspace blog in high school once and they took it to the principal's office. The principal didn't know how to handle it exactly because one it was outside of school and two I was young so the writing was prosey and ridiculous sounding. I was told not to do that again and watch what I post on blogs. Probably a good lesson to learn early.

In this story, however is an adult taking their anger out on another adult by being violent online in a game. Than again, there is so much violence in games that don't people regularly injure or kill each other's characters in games like Socom or Call of duty?
I could see the police convicting her of stolen identity online. The murdering of his avator not so much though. If it was flamming or nasty attacks made through email maybe.

People these days.

Thanks! I'm glad you get it/like it/don't look at me funny because of my screen name. I read about this online murder thing this morning and I couldn't believe it was even written up into an article. ridiculous!
I've been meaning to ask you about the paper. How big (and long) of a time commitment do you need to make? Is it fun? Unpaid, I assume? I'm curious about it and I feel like I need to get involved at UWT/make some friends....

So i looked at the websites for Tahoma West and the Ledger and they weren't too helpful.
Do they pay you the stipend at the end of the work period (curious cause I work for a const. co and cause of the economy might be looking for a new job soon)? Do you have to have had experience or examples of your work? Are they easy people to work with? Maybe we could chat about it after class? I have no idea what to even expect?

What do you guys like? Let me know and maybe I can be more specific about cool things. I'm not sure if the weather will be nice, but a trip to infinite soup (google it for address- I will write a review today sometime- working on it) and then walk to Wright Park would be fun. Tacoma has been working on the park all summer, and it is nice- lots of fall color. At the park there is a very neat old conservatory (http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/page.php?id=21). I really like this type of thing. There's always the museum of glass and the Tacoma art museum... The Renaissance Cafe is nearby. David and I love it, even though its a little quirky. They have delicious eggs. You could go walk along the water front at Ruston Way and go to Duke's for lunch.... The Point Defiance Zoo is awesome and nearby. The whole park is cool- you could bring food, go on 5-mile drive, and stop and eat by the water... Let me know what you like and I can think more. If you have any questions about where this stuff is, just let me know... I can respond more when I get home from work :D
